IT companies in Brazil invest less in research and development
The current economic crisis in Brazil has directly affected the investments of Brazilian companies. IT companies, for example, have decreased their investments in research and development (R & D). Data from this reduction are in editing 2014 Census conducted by the National Assespro (Federation of Associations of Brazilian Companies for Information Technology).
More than a fifth (22.4%) of domestic enterprises did not make any investment in R & D. The index rose nearly three percentage points compared to 2013. Another 4.4% of respondents said they do not know if you had some kind of investment in the area.
As president of the National Assespro, Luis Mario Luchetta, “the area of R & D does not offer short-term benefits for organizations and is often overlooked by entrepreneurs. It is a worrying fact, it shows that Brazilian companies invest not just in the category more indicated to circumvent the economic crisis.”
In an economic crisis environment, are the new products launched on the market that can create better business opportunities. Therefore, investment in R & D is necessary for allowing professionals and companies greater insight in developing new applications such as improved processes or products.
Among the Brazilian companies that perform some kind of investment in R & D, 12.9% use between 4% and 8% of sales for the production of knowledge. Another highlight of the survey is the increase in companies that invest more than 15% of revenue in research and development. This figure reaches 9.7% of respondents, two percentage points above the 2013 Census.
Brazilian companies are also behind the competition in Latin America. Research has shown that companies in the region carry out more R & D and only 16.1% do not make any contribution in the area, which is a major concern in staying current with market performance. Unlike Brazil, companies from the 18 investigated countries prefer to allocate some resource in the area, and 33.2% invest up to 2% of revenues.
When making investments, companies prefer applications of information systems. 38% of respondents, the most important are the information processing systems, computer systems, process control, among others. Already the area of creation and management software appears in second place, accounting for 29.3% of respondents. Third, there are information systems on the World Wide Web, with 25.6%.
With the lack of investment in research and development, the new Brazilian products fail to get the necessary representation in the total turnover. The number of companies who manage over 50% of sales with solutions under three years of development has been reduced by ten percentage points between 2013 and 2014, according to the Census shows. This ratio is currently at 18.4% of Brazilian companies, the same variation in comparison with Latin America.
In this edition of the Census 2014 National Assespro participated 814 companies from 19 countries of Latin America. Together, they generated a large database of just over 80,000 responses. Companies in Brazil account for 53% of total respondents.
