Research by Gartner shows that worldwide IT spending should reach $ 3.5 trillion in 2015, representing a decrease of 5.5% compared with last year.

Analysts attribute this fall with the rise in the US dollar and believe that, in terms of constant currency, the market should still grow 2.5%. In April, the company predicted that IT spending would decrease 1.3% in US dollars and grow 31% in constant currency.

John-David Lovelock, Gartner research vice president, says this is not a market collapse. “These are illusions that large fluctuations in the US dollar value against other currencies may create. However, there are side effects related to increased dollar. Suppliers have to raise prices to protect the costs and margins of products. organizations and consumers have to make new buying decisions in the light of new prices, “he says.

The company’s forecast takes into account indicators of the main sectors of industry such as hardware, software, IT services and telecommunications market. Global IT and business executives have used these quarterly reports to recognize opportunities, market challenges, and base their business decisions.

For 2015, the communication services segment will continue to be one of the fastest invest in IT, with an approximate cost of $ 1.5 trillion in 2015. However, this area is undergoing revisions and erosion in prices and competitive threats prevent the growth of revenue in proportion to the increasing use in a large part of the market.

In relation to the market devices, smartphones are still in the lead, especially with the growth of Apple. Have computers and tablet markets begin to weaken.

In the segment of data center systems, it is expected that the network and storage markets have weaker growth also due to increased dollar. The budgets of the companies for data center systems in local spending should remain stable during the year, but it is expected that users extend the life of its products, delaying replacements and thus offset the price increase.

Spending on business software should also be reduced by 1.2% this year, with total revenue of $ 654 million. Gartner analysts said that many software vendors have tried to avoid the rise in prices, on the grounds that what counts in the service is the market share and not profitability.

Spending on IT services in 2015 should further decrease 4.3% and Gartner expects a small increase in consulting expenses in 2015 and 2016. Suppliers sought help with navigation business and technology complexities to stimulate new demand from buyers who increasingly prefer solutions that minimize the time and implementation costs.

“IT activity is stronger than the growth in spending indicated. The decrease in price in major markets such as communications and IT services, and the shift to delivery as a service mask the increase in activity,” concludes Lovelock.

The survey will be presented at the Gartner Security and Risk Management Conference on 10 and 11 August at the Sheraton Sao Paulo Hotel.
