Not exist without competitive logistics IT
Since its inception, the computer plays a fundamental role in the manipulation of data and the generation of information. Initially, his application was exclusively scientific and military, but with the constant evolution, now supports the most diverse areas of business and become a strategic area for companies.
Within organizations, the computer passed the old CPD (Central Data Processing), only processed data to the Department of Informatics, to an area responsible for automating processes and development of specific software. With the increasing development of technology, the areas of communication and telephony companies were engaged, thus creating the term IT (Information Technology).
In recent years, with the convergence of voice and data in some companies, IT is called the ICT (the letter “C” refers to the area of Communication) and the trend is to incorporate intelligent applications such as Smartphones, Google Glass, One Android etc., and integrate them into business. The phenomenon could be called Smart Application (Intelligent Applications) and from that ICTs, why not come?
In practice, the IT department has been transformed. Rather, their main role was to provide support and ensure the functioning of systems, but currently it has become a highly strategic and mission is to support business growth, generating competitive advantage and supporting the Corporate Governance area organizations. But if the technology advances apace, what impact the advancement of IT in business, especially in logistics?
It would be impossible to implement best practices applied to the supply chain without the use of IT tools, eg, WMS (Warehouse Management System), TMS (Transportation Management System), data collectors, bar codes, RFID tags (Radio-Frequency IDentification), among other technologies available to the market.
Equally impossible would be the expansion of companies with poor logistics, deadlines not met, high cost and low competitiveness. Do not invest in technology in an increasingly globalized and competitive world is to dig the hole as deep as possible and bury your company and the reputation of your business.
The biggest challenge for companies is how to invest. Hardware? Software? People? Yes, yes and yes. The computer area is composed of this tripod, which must be harmonious. Computers do not generate a competitive edge by itself because software are required. The software does not work alone, because people are needed. Unskilled people do not operate the software properly. It’s a vicious circle. Amateur work if your logistics want to be successful, sure. Invest in your IT staff, or ICT, or ICT, regardless of its nomenclature.
