You may have seen many articles and coachesressaltando the importance of a leader for the organization. In fact, he is the figure with the ability to encourage and positively influence employees towards the desired goals and results, maintaining aligned with company values team. When the goals involve sustainability, the leader gains an even more strategic position.
Sebrae Sustainability Center, in partnership with the Sector Intelligence System (SIS-Sebrae/SC), developed a report pointing out the duties of a sustainable leader, as well as their role in the organization. Considering that sustainability must be inserted transversely, as a business strategy in all activities of the organization, the figure of the leader is a connection between discourse and practice, leading stakeholders to feel part of the process.
Involvement is the key word. Employees, suppliers and the community tend to adopt more responsible attitudes when they perceive their role in the context in which they are inserted. Once the company has taken a more socially and environmentally responsible stance it should motivate those involved to develop new behaviors. Remembering that this does not mean to exclude those who do not meet this standard, which contradicts the concept of inclusion permeated by sustainability. You need to promote, disseminate and assist actions to implement more sustainable practices by partners in the entire production chain.
Thus, education becomes another key point of this process. The constant guidance and training on the basis of values and goals set by the business are strategies that involve the whole company, but opened the motivation of a leader.
The document entitled Plan for Sustainable Leadership, produced by the Global Compact of the United Nations (UN), pointed out some of the expected leader attitudes as a way of directing the activities within companies and contribute to the development of personal skills. They are:
- Develop cooperation strategy;
- Develop products and services with sustainable features;
- Disclose the company’s stance, encouraging stakeholders also develop;
- Disseminate actions for the sector in which it operates;
- Involve suppliers, verify their willingness to change and monitor their practices;
- Establish a method of monitoring the organization’s resources, such as water, energy and waste.
Sustainability in business is an ability to relate economic, social and environmental aspects. Leaders with this bias are people who, above all, believe in the values cultivated, and experience different behaviors. Are always willing to acquire new knowledge and, especially, inspire an environment where everyone involved to feel motivated and interconnected innovation. By incorporating sustainable leading figure in the company’s strategy, it is possible to transform the organizational culture and conquer, of course, the desired results.
